In recent years the River Thurso has become a very favourite destination for anglers looking to book a fishing holiday in the UK. The Thurso River offer’s fly fishing for salmon on twelve private beats which rotate on a daily basis. This allows anglers that fish for either three or six days to experience most of the river. Salmon start to get caught on the Thurso from March with the prime time being April and May for spring salmon fishing. The summer run usually begins to gain momentum from mid-June with prime months being July and August. Given adequate water September can also be a very productive month before the season finally draws to a close in early October.
There are some fantastic accommodation options when it comes to fishing the Thurso river which makes it the perfect Scottish fishing holiday destination. The famous Ulbster Arms hotel offers superb accommodation and is located on the banks of the Thurso River in the village of Halkirk. There are also some lodges which have been recently built within the grounds of the hotel. These are modern but have a Highland twist when it comes to the décor. They provide both comfortable and luxurious accommodation to the visiting angler. If staying in a fishing lodge is your thing then the Thurso River could offer your perfect fishing holiday.
Moving further south but remaining in the Scottish Highlands the River Alness is another river which is well worth considering when planning a fishing holiday in Scotland. The Alness is much smaller than the Thurso and therefore provides a more intimate setting when it comes to chasing silver during you UK fishing holiday. There are a total of six beats which rotate on a daily basis. The Alness is a spate river meaning that the best times to the fish the river is after there has been some rain and a lift in water. The River Alness combines spectacular summer fishing with breath taking scenery. The prime months on the Alness are from July through to September.
There are numerous accommodation options when it comes fishing on the Alness. These range from beautiful fishing lodges located close to the river to magnificent stately homes which can accommodate up to eighteen guests. There are also numerous holiday cottages where anglers can stay. These can accommodate anything from two to eight people making them the perfect base not for just salmon fishing but also for exploring the surrounding Highland countryside.
If you are looking for a more regal venue for accommodation during you salmon fishing holiday on the River Alness, then look no further than the 18th century stately home located on the estate adjacent to the river. There are nine generous bedrooms which are all ensuite. The accommodation comprises a drawing room, dining room, sitting room and also a billiard room. Outside there is a magnificent five acre walled garden with tennis court and croquet lawn where guests can relax and enjoy a drink during those long balmy summer evenings.
Guests that fish the Alness and stay on the estate can also trout fish on a private trout lake. If you are staying in one of the holiday cottages and the salmon fishing is proving to be difficult then this is a great option as you can enjoy the experience of staying in a holiday cottage and fishing on a private trout lake.
Just a few miles south of the River Alness is the famous River Ness. This is another famous salmon river in Scotland. The River Ness is just over six miles long and connects the world famous Loch Ness to the sea. The River Ness runs into the Moray firth and salmon starting running the river from February. Usually, these fish run the Ness and up through Loch Ness to the River Morriston. The River Ness itself starts producing fish from April. The season runs from February through to October with prime months usually being from May through to September. The Ness is quite large in size for a Highland river.
There are some excellent accommodation options for anglers that want to fish the River Ness. The some very fine hotels that anglers can use which are located close to both the River Ness and Loch Ness. For those who prefer self-catering accommodation there are some magnificent log cabins with hot tubs. This can make the River Ness the perfect option for those looking for a log cabin holiday with salmon fishing and a hot tub. The thought of unwinding and relaxing in your own hot tub next to your fishing log cabin after a hard days fishing can be very appealing and it’s easy to see why!
In addition to the log cabins there are also numerous self-catering lodges located around the River Ness and Loch Ness so the accommodation options are truly endless. With Loch Ness just on your doorstep if there are non-fishers in your party there are no shortage of activities to enjoy. These include mountain biking, hill walking, golf and also searching for the World famous but elusive Loch Ness monster!
Fully equipped, guided and non guided salmon fishing packages in Scotland.
Other rivers in northern Scotland on which can we offer prime Scottish salmon fishing include the River Findhorn and its close neighbour the world famous River Spey. The River Spey needs little introduction in salmon fishing circles. The River Spey is of course is the birth place of famous double handed Spey cast. The River Spey originates in the Cairngorm Mountains and runs down to Spey Bay in Fochabers. The Spey runs through the heart of Scotland’s whisky country with numerous distilleries dotted along the length and breadth of this spectacular river. For fly fishing in Scotland there is arguably a no finer venue than the River Spey for a UK fishing holiday . This is because the River Spey is naturally very fast flowing in parts lending it itself to being perfect fly fishing water. The River Spey opens its banks to anglers in early February and the season runs through until the end of September. For spring fishing, the prime months are usually April and May but nice fish are caught in March. For summer fishing the best fishing is usually from mid-June through until the end of August.
Accommodation for anglers fishing on the River Spey depends a lot on which area of the river you are fishing. If you are fishing the upper river then there are some beautiful log cabins located close to the towns of Aviemore and Grantown on Spey. Staying in this style of accommodation allows you to have that log cabin with hot tub fishing experience.
As you move further downstream on the river many anglers stay close to towns and villages located on the river like Aberlour, Craigellachie and Rothes. Indeed, many of the beats come with their own salmon fishing lodge. These lodges are very comfortable and often luxurious and are located close to or on the banks of the river. Many can sleep up to eighteen guests and if cooking is not your thing we can always arrange a chef to come in and cook all your meals. This experience can be the ideal fishing lodge holiday in the UK.
The River Dee is another one of Scotland’s “big four” salmon rivers. The River Dee wynds it way all the way down from Braemar and meets the sea in Aberdeen. The Dee was traditionally famous for its early spring run. Although spring salmon are still caught in reasonable numbers it is the summer salmon and grilse runs which are improving. For spring fishing usually, the best months on the river are from mid-March until the end of May and then from July through until mid-September. We are able to offer some of the best salmon fishing on the River Dee on exclusive private beats making this an ideal destination for a fishing holiday in the UK. With the River Dee being mostly fly only this makes it the perfect option for a fly fishing holiday in Scotland chasing Atlantic Salmon.
As with many other locations around Scotland we can offer a variety of accommodation options on Royal Deeside including log cabins with hot tubs situated close to the river. Also, a number of estates we work with offer holiday cottages with private lakes so anglers can fish for wild Brown trout. This is often a great alternative especially if the salmon fishing is proving to be tough. Many of the holiday cottages have their own stretch of river so those looking for that perfect holiday cottage with private river fishing experience, this could be the option for you. In addition to the self-catering style of holiday accommodation we also work with a number of luxury hotels on Deeside making the accommodation options for your fishing holiday in the UK truly endless.
The River Tay runs through magnificent Perthshire and is the largest river in Scotland. It starts well above Loch Tay in Killin and empties its waters in the estuary at Dundee. The Tay and her tributaries have a reputation for producing big fish. Indeed, the British rod caught record for the Atlantic Salmon was caught from the River Tay weighing a colossal 64lbs. The Tay opens on the 15th January and the season draws to a close on 15th October. The river enjoys decent runs of spring salmon with prime months usually being April and May. For summer fishing the best times are usually from mid-June through until mid-August. The Tay also has a number of productive tributaries which include the River Lyon, Tummel and Isla amongst others. These are all productive salmon rivers within their own right. A boat can be used on many beats on the River Tay. This is because of the sheer size and width of the river in places. This can make the Tay a favoured choice for anglers that prefer not to wade and prefer a more relaxed way of salmon fishing.
From luxury hotels to cosy B & B’s we offer a wide range of accommodation options for anglers looking to wet a line in the mighty River Tay. For those who prefer the self-catering option then we can offer holiday cottages or log cabins with private fishing. We also work with a number accommodation providers that offer log cabin holidays with hot tubs and private fishing lakes so anglers can fish for trout. Perthshire and the River Tay is the perfect UK fishing holiday destination.
The River Tweed runs through the Scottish Borders and is located the furthest south of Scotland’s “big 4 salmon rivers”. The Tweed starts it journey in the hills of the Scottish Borders and wynds its way down through beautiful farmland and the villages of Peebles, Melrose, Kelso and Coldstream. These towns are steeped in history and often a welcome and fascinating distraction from the salmon fishing.
The River Tweed was once famed for its autumn fishing but sadly in recent years the famous autumn run has failed to materialise in any great numbers. However, the Tweed still produces lovely spring salmon from February through to late May. During the summer months the river is famed for producing large Sea trout often weighing into double figures of pounds. The best of the summer fishing usually starts in July and runs through until mid-September.
There is a huge range of accommodation options we can offer for anglers looking to fish the River Tweed. We work with a number of hotels in the area as well as self-catering providers. The different types of self-catering options include luxury fishing lodges located close to the river as well as holiday cottages with private fishing. There are also some magnificent log cabins with private lakes in the Scottish Borders so anglers can enjoy targeting a variety of species. If you are looking for that special fishing holiday in the UK then the Scottish Borders could be the place for you.
So far we have looked at the salmon fishing and holiday accommodation options on mainland Scotland. However, Scotland’s west coast is surrounded by beautiful islands which offer some prolific salmon fishing. Islands like Isla, Arran and Jura all offer some great fishing. Probably the most well-known Islands around Scotland for salmon fishing is the Western Isles. These of course are made up of Lewis and Harris.
Lewis and Harris offer fantastic salmon and grilse fishing over the summer months on a number of different rivers which span both islands. All the rivers on the Islands are smaller and spate rivers which mean the fish much better after there has been some rain and a lift in water. Most of the rivers originate from a loch or lake and often good numbers of salmon run into the loch. This allows anglers to fish loch style from a boat for Atlantic Salmon. This is a truly special and memorable experience. In addition to the prolific salmon and Sea trout fishing there are also hundreds of trout lochs on the Island which are teaming with wild Brown Trout. This gives anglers the opportunity to fly fish for this magnificent fish.
The Western Isles offer the visiting angler some of the most dramatic and rugged scenery Scotland has to offer. This makes it a breath taking backdrop to chasing Atlantic Salmon and trout. In addition to fresh water fishing there is also great sea fishing around the islands. This can be accessed from the shore and also by boat which we can arrange. Species which can be caught include cod, mackerel and Skate amongst others. This makes the Western Isles the perfect destination for that UK fishing holiday.
In terms of accommodation in the area there are a number of magnificent fishing lodges on the Islands we can offer. These lodges offer luxury accommodation in a spectacular setting. Many of the estates also have their own private stretch of river as well as private trout lakes so anglers can chose which species they wish to target. If anglers would prefer more regal surroundings then there are a few estates which have guest accommodation in castles which provide a spectacular base whilst chasing silver. So, if you are looking for a fishing holiday in the UK and want to stay in castle then this could be the option for you.
Again, as with so much of Scotland we have fantastic holiday accommodation providers on the Islands that cater for all budgets and tastes. This make the Scottish Islands a great salmon fishing holiday destination well worth considering.

I will never forget everything you've done! Thank you so so much - it has been a total pleasure to work with you on this special trip.
I just wanted to let you know that we have finished our holiday in Scotland, driving back as we speak. Our stay at the Alness was as beautiful as you said it would be and gave us a real understanding of this lovely highland river. The service we got from the gillie was exceptional the accommodation completely wonderful and we can't thank you enough for that ... The Thurso was full of fish the stay and level of service we had was exceptional. We had one pre breakfast salmon from the bridge pool, and during heavy rain in the last few hours on our last day, we caught a 15lb cock salmon on upper fence pool beat 2 which was the icing on the cake. With our highest regards.
I should have written before now to say that although we had low water and no fish I enjoyed my visit to the Alness very much. A lovely setting and an entertaining and educative day with Peter. A lovely present from the kids.
I just wanted to say how much of a wonderful time we all had on the River with the two David’s last weekend. It was absolutely magical and the David’s were so accommodating and helpful, my father was so so happy and that’s all we wanted. Thank you again for all your hard work. We have recommended you to all our fishing friends.
Just wanted to say a huge thank you for arranging the trip with Dad: we had an amazing time - I managed to lose two fish (on the Dalmarnock beat) and Dad landed one on the Newtlye beat. Thank you so much again.
