SALMON AND TROUT FISHING SCOTTISH HIGHLANDS TOUR

No trip to Scotland is complete without visiting the Scottish Highlands. They cover a massive geographical area north of the Great Glen. The Scottish Highlands are a truly unspoiled remote wilderness and offer a spectacular backdrop for even the most discerning of anglers. The unique blend of stunning scenery coupled with prolific rivers and lochs makes the highlands a fishing mecca for salmon and trout anglers. Many of the rivers in the Scottish Highlands are spate rivers and are quite small in size but big on character.

Our ever popular salmon and trout fishing tour of the Scottish Highlands allows you to experience some of the best salmon and trout fishing the region has to offer and is a firm favourite among visitors to Scotland. The tour allows you to fish on two rivers in the Scottish Highlands for salmon which vary greatly in character but can be equally prolific. In addition to this you also experience fishing for Wild Brown trout on some of the most beautiful lochs in Caithness. We recommend that the months of June through to August are the best months to book this trip as this coincides with both the prime salmon and trout fishing times in the Scottish Highlands.

The River Alness is typical Highland spate river which truly showcases Highland river salmon fishing at its best in a very intimate setting. The Alness is located just a few miles north of Inverness and is the starting point of your magical Highlands tour. The River Alness starts producing fish in April when the river boasts a small run of spring salmon. From July onwards the River Alness becomes a fly fisher dream and catches increase significantly as the season progresses. Although the salmon are generally smaller in size, the River Alness can produce excellent sport from July through to the end of October. To get a full flavour of fishing on the Alness we recommend two days salmon fishing on the river coupled with two night’s accommodation in the local area. Accommodation options can be tailored to your specific needs.

After your second day’s fishing on the River Alness you take the scenic drive north to Caithness where you start the next leg of your Highlands fishing adventure on the Thurso River. The Thurso, is one of the most northerly rivers in Scotland where you can fly fish for salmon. It is also one of the most productive in the country. The River Thurso benefits from having Loch More at its headwaters. This allows water to be released during dry spells, ensuring there is enough flow for fresh to run the river even during the drier summer months. Year on year, the River Thurso enjoys a productive season and fish can be caught fly fishing from opening day on the 11th of January right through until  the end of season. The prime months for anglers fishing the River Thurso is usually from June through till August. We recommend fishing for two days on the River Thurso on two different beats.

When fishing on the Thurso anglers stay at the fabulous Ulbster Arms Hotel which is located on the banks of the river. The hotel has been welcoming salmon anglers fishing the Thurso for decades and is a true fishing mecca in the area. Four nights’ accommodation at the Ulbster arms is included in this package.

After your two days salmon fishing on the Thurso you will get to experience a day’s wild Brown Trout fishing from a boat on one of Caithness’s famous trout lochs . Caithness has a number of magnificent secluded lochs which produce hard fighting wild Brown Trout. These fish are truly wild and over the years have developed natural feeding habits. They range in size anything from around a pound in weight up to three pounds and sometimes more. Some of the best lochs in Caithness include Loch St. Johns, Loch Calder and of course the world famous Loch Watten.

Loch Watten is probably the best known trout loch in the area and for good reason. Every year anglers from all over the UK flock to Caithness to fish for the famous Loch Watten Brown Trout. These fish are very similar in appearance to the Loch Leven trout and in spite of being a Brown Trout appear very silver in colour and almost like a Sea trout. They have a reputation for being very hard fighting with fish weighing over five pounds not uncommon.

To get the best from your salmon and trout fishing highlands tour we recommend two days salmon fishing on the River Alness with two nights’ accommodation in the local area. After this you will enjoy two days salmon fishing on the Thurso as well as one day’s wild Brown trout fishing on a Caithness loch. This would be coupled with four nights accommodation at the Ulbster Arms Hotel in Halkirk. As with any of our packages this can be tailored to suit your requirements. Are you ready to chase salmon and Wild Brown trout in the Scottish Highlands? It will be an experience that lives with you forever!
