The spring salmon fishing season starts in Scotland in January and runs through until the end of May. At this time of year some of the largest and most powerful salmon are consistently caught. It is not uncommon to land fish weighing in excess of twenty pounds during the spring months in Scotland. As the fish are usually very fresh the power they possess is second to none. Scottish spring salmon truly put both angler and tackle to the ultimate test. It is often the case that you don’t catch large numbers of fish during the spring months but the fighting qualities and the size of fish certainly make up for this. Many anglers prefer to catch two spring salmon in a day rather than eight or ten fish in a day later in the season.
Scotland has a number of prime rivers for spring salmon fishing. We have hand-picked some of the most productive spring fishing salmon rivers in the country for this package so that you stand the best chance of making contact with the king of fish at this special time of year. This exciting package offers the choice of three different fishing locations which can all be very productive depending on when you want to fish in Scotland during the spring season.
The Thurso river is one of the most productive spring salmon rivers in Scotland. The Thurso is located in the majestic Scottish Highlands where the scenery is truly jaw dropping. The Thurso River opens its banks to anglers on the 11th of January with the prime spring months usually being April and May. When fishing on the Thurso we would recommend that anglers stay at the fabulous Ulbster Arms Hotel which is located on the banks of the river. The hotel has been welcoming salmon anglers fishing the Thurso for decades and is a true fishing mecca in the area.
Another river which is productive during the spring months is the majestic River Spey. The Spey needs little introduction in Scottish salmon fishing circles and runs through the world famous whiskey country. There is no finer location in Scotland to fly fish for spring salmon as the fast flowing nature of the river makes it perfect for swinging a fly. The River Spey opens in February and regularly produces spring fish on opening day. The best time to chase spring salmon on the Spey is between the months of March and May. When fishing on the River Spey we recommend that anglers stay at Aberlour Hotel for fishers who have four legged friends and the Mash Tun which is also located in the pretty Speyside town of Aberlour. Both hotels are no more than a stone’s throw from the river itself.
The mighty River Tay holds the British rod caught record for an Atlantic Salmon weighing sixty four pounds which was caught in 1922. The River Tay opens its banks to anglers on the 15th of January and produces fresh hard fighting spring salmon from opening day. The Tay is the largest river we offer in this package and it has a reputation for produces large fish with fish caught regularly in excess of twenty pounds with some tipping the scales over the magical thirty pounds mark. April and May are usually the most productive months for spring fishing on the River Tay. We recommend that anglers fishing the Tay reside in is the beautiful village of Dunkeld which is situated on the banks of the river. Dunkeld was recently voted the best place to live in Scotland so you can see why it is such a firm favourite among visiting anglers in the area. The hotels we use in Dunkeld include Dunkeld House Hotel as well as the Atholl Arms. Both hotels are situated on the banks of the Tay and have a fine tradition catering for fishing guests.
