River Blackwater Salmon Fishing
Package Overview
Salmon fishing at Careysville, located on the lower reaches of the River Blackwater (the Munster Blackwater) in Southern Ireland, offers one of the most distinguished and memorable angling experiences in the country. Set among the rolling hills of County Cork, the Careysville Fishery has built a long-standing reputation for excellence, thanks to its quality of fishing, beautiful classical fly water, and the timeless charm of the estate. Owned by the Duke of Devonshire’s family for generations, it has drawn anglers from across the world in search of the Atlantic salmon. The estate itself is rich in history. Careysville House dates back to 1812 and offering a sense of tradition rod catches have been meticulously recorded in leather bound ledgers since 1920 and still are to this day.
The Blackwater is one of Ireland’s premier salmon rivers, renowned for its long, consistent runs of fish throughout the season. Careysville sits on the middle-lower river, a particularly productive section where the river widens and quickens, creating ideal conditions for salmon pushing upstream from the estuary at Youghal. Its natural gradient, depth and varied currents form a classic mix of glides and deeper holding pools that are perfectly suited to fly fishing.
Careysville is especially prized for its double-bank fly water. The pools, many of which feature long sweeping bends, allow for a beautifully controlled swing of the fly. The banks are well maintained, wading is generally easy and access is excellent. A 4x4 is available to transport guests to the more distant pools and two boats are used for river crossings. The fishery is managed by two ghillies, led by head ghillie and fishery manager Patrick Devennie. Productive fly patterns include the Posh Tosh, Cascades, Silver Stoat, Gold Willie Gunn, and Red or Black Francis, in tubes and doubles, scaling down to sizes 12–16 during summer low water.
Salmon are taken throughout the season at Careysville. Spring fish, or “springers,” often arrive early and are fresh off the tide, powerful, hard running and highly prized. Summer brings the main grilse run; though smaller, grilse come in greater numbers and can provide fast, exciting sport during the warmer months.
Beyond the fishing, Careysville is celebrated for its exclusivity, privacy and atmosphere. The tree-lined avenue, meadows and quiet footpaths create a feeling of seclusion and heritage. A fully equipped fishing hut sits by the river, complete with parking, a stove, electricity and a toilet, where lunch is served each day. Hospitality is central to the Careysville experience. The Georgian lodge is available on an exclusive, all-inclusive basis, offering six bedrooms and exceptional cuisine sourced from local produce. Breakfast and dinner are served in the dining room, with lunch at the fishing lodge, and in summer guests can enjoy an evening BBQ by the river, cooked to order by the resident chef. The staff are renowned for their warmth, local knowledge and attention to detail, ensuring every guest feels welcomed and well cared for.
Whether you are an experienced salmon angler, new to the sport, or simply seeking a tranquil getaway, Careysville delivers an exceptional and unforgettable experience.
