There was a big upturn in catches on some of our Scottish rivers last week. This had a lot to do with a rise in river levels following heavy rain. On many rivers it was the first decent lift in water sine late spring and this certainly seemed to do the trick. Many of the fish became more aggressive and this made them more inclined to take a fly. Also, at this time of year a drop in temperature can also make the salmon more aggressive. Often, this turns the thoughts of the fish towards spawning.
Last week some beats on the River Spey, Dee and Tweed fished well and hopefully this is just a sign of things to come for the remainder of the season. It is just amazing how a drop of fresh water can transform a salmon fisher’s week!
