The Willie Gunn is a very successful fly pattern for catching salmon in Scotland. It is one of the few flies that you can fish with confidence all year round. The pattern can be equally effective in early spring as during the summer months. Many salmon anglers also use the fly with great effect in September and October.
The Willie Gunn was originally developed in the Scottish Highlands by a gentleman by the name of Willie Gunn and nowadays it has become an iconic Scottish salmon fly. The fly works well in all sizes from small dressed doubles through to two-inch brass tubes. In recent times, there have been a number of variations of the Willie Gunn created. Probably the most famous of these is the gold-bodied, jungle cock version of the salmon fly. These are also very effective. So, prior to coming to Scotland, on your Scottish salmon fishing holiday, make sure you have a few Willie Gunn’s in your box, as they won’t let you down!
