The River Tay is one of the most famous salmon rivers in the British Isles and is a salmon angler’s paradise. The Tay flows through the heart of beautiful Perthshire towards the City of Perth and it then meets the sea at Dundee. The Tay is the biggest river in Scotland and originates close to the west coast of Scotland. It has a number of large tributaries which are excellent salmon rivers within their own right. Rivers like the Dochart, Lyon, Tummel and Isla amongst others all produce good numbers of hard fighting salmon. The River Tay has a reputation for producing large fish and it is a well-known fact that if you are looking to catch a big salmon in Scotland then you should look no further than the Tay.
The salmon fishing season on the River Tay commences in mid-January and runs through until the middle of October. Fresh spring salmon are caught on a regular basis from opening day onwards and many of these fish are often big in size. The prime spring fishing on the river usually starts from early April onwards. Prior to this, some beats on the lower river can produce fish on a consistent basis. Many of the fish caught at this time of year are heading for Loch Tay. It is the middle river which is usually the most productive area of the river for spring salmon fishing in April and May. Often spring fish are also caught in early June. The summer run on the river seems to be arriving later each year. In the past, the main runs of summer fish would coincide with Wimbledon fortnight. However, it does appear that now the summer fish are running in early August. In the past, the river has been famed for its autumn fishing. From September onwards the larger autumn salmon begin to enter the system and these fish can give terrific sport.
One of the great advantages of fishing on the River Tay is that the water can never be too low. Due to the multiple lochs at the head of the Tay system, there is always enough water for fish to run even in times of drought. Most beats on the river allow fly fishing and spinning making it ideal for any salmon anglers new to the sport.
So if you are thinking about booking a salmon fishing holiday in Scotland why not consider fishing on the River Tay? With its beautiful scenery, good runs of salmon and the chance of a biggie, you won’t be disappointed!
